Nursing and government jobs were dominant. By Diana Arhin theclaw.ca Canadore and Nipissing students got the chance to meet with potential summer and permanent employers at the 16th annual Job fair at the Canadore gym. Students steadily filled the gym, armed with resumes for the five-hour event. With more than 15 tables, students were lured by free pens, hand sanitizers and - in Goodlife Fitness’ case - a chance to win a free week-long trial membership. Jobs available ranged from nursing, policing, to working at a resort, internships and starting your own business. But not everyone found what they were looking for. “ I didn’t’ find anything here today geared toward Sociology students,” Brie Richards, a fourth-year Nipissing student, said. “It is also my first time coming to this event and hoped there would be more opportunities but the employers were genuinely interested and talking with me,” concluded Richards who was looking for a full-time position. “There are no trade-related jobs here and I am very disappointed. It’s hot and I wish there were refreshments here,” Josh Farquhar, a Plumbing student at Commerce said. One table that didn’t offer a job but an experience was Explore. It offers a five-week program for English-speaking students who want to learn French. The Government of Canada issued more than 7,000 grants last year for students wishing to learn French. The OPP, York Region Police and North Bay City Police were recruiting members of the community. “Policing is one of the best careers out there, we have been recession-proof for over 30 years, we have a good retirement and benefits,” Aaron Tang of the York region police said. “I have been working with the YRP for 8 years and we are happy to see students come out today and hopefully some of them can attend our recruitment and info sessions,” Tang added. |
