With the regular season winding down, the last-place Manitoulin Islanders visited Memorial Gardens to tango with the North Bay Trappers Sunday afternoon. By Ryan Williams theclaw.ca The North Bay Jr 'A' Trappers put on a Harlem Globetrotters-type 13-2 win over the Manitoulin Islanders Sunday. The lowly Islanders came into the game coming off an 11-0 loss on Saturday night, and with only four wins on the season. “They (Islanders) looked disinterested right from the get-go,” said Trappers Head Coach Ian Swalucynski. It only took two minutes and 40 seconds for North Bay to tally their first goal, which was a 4-on-1 after the Islanders defenceman broke his stick trying to clear the puck. Sacha Guimond buried his lone goal of the day to complete the rush. “I don’t think it gets boring, guys get a little more excited and want to do a bit more,” said Trappers Assistant Captain Dan Frawley about the 13-2 win. The most exciting part of the game came in the first period. A Trapper's shot that rang off the post was called a goal. The goal light came on and the referee signalled goal, but the puck never crossed the line. Carson Houle of the Islanders received two 10-minute misconducts and a game misconduct for arguing the call. After discussing the play with the goal judge the refs made the right call and waved it off; no goal. But Houle was still 'gone'. The Trappers outshot the Islanders in every period, which ended up 50-20 in favor of the The Gardens home team. “We had to make sure we played the game the right way, and for a change we finished a game off,” said Swalucynski. “We played our positions so we are happy,” he added. GOALIE GETS OFFENSIVE The three stars of the game were; 3rd - Mathew Pepin from the Trappers (one goal, two assists), 2nd - Morgan Rudiger from the Trappers (one goal, three assists), 1st - Darnell Koosess from the Trappers (two goals, two assists) Even the starting goalie for the Trappers, Markus Leikkari, joined in the fun by tallying a point. He caught the Islanders on a bad line change and dished the puck to the far blueline to spring a powerplay 3-on-0 breakaway. Jonathon Aubertin scored to finish the play for one of his two goals on the day and to ensure his goalie a point for the assist. The 2 p.m. game was perfect timing so the players could make it home to 'enjoy' the Canada vs USA Olympic hockey game. With the Trappers having a few Americans on their team, this game could mean bragging rights for some players. “I am cheering for the Americans,” laughed Frawley. “I was born in the 'States, so I might as well go for the underdogs,” he added. The Canadians outnumber the Americans in the change room 18 to 3, but that doesn’t discourage the American-born players. “There’s been money floating around,” laughed Frawley, adding “I think the Americans are going to win 3-2 and Bobby Ryan gets the game winner.” (NOTE: The Americans won 5-3 but Ryan didn't score.) |
